A Radish-ing Food Festival

Oaxaca, Mexico has celebrated the Night of Radishes each December 23rd since 1897. This cultural food event puts elaborate radish sculptures on display for thousands of onlookers.

The Noche de Rábanos (Night of the Radishes) draws from a traditional Dominican Christmas feast in which decorative radishes adorned the dinner. Today, radishes are grown especially for the event, allowed to grow to epic sizes and odd shapes well past harvest season. Local artisans compete to have the most original and beautiful radish designs and the chance to appear as the winner in the next day’s newspaper.

Oaxaca has a population just over a quarter million people, all of which seems to be present for the Night of Radishes. The event lasts only a few hours but is a rich part of Oaxacan history and culture. To take part in the festival, fly into Oaxaca and spend the winter holidays in town. There are plenty of museums, parks, gardens, and the city’s famous ruins. Oaxaca is considered “Mexico’s culinary capital” with an array of delicious treats to stimulate your taste buds after seeing all that decorative food!
