“Festival of the Steel Phallus" Stands Up to the Hype

During the first week of April, the streets of Kawasaki, Japan put penis on parade as part of a festival dating back to the early 1600s.

The Kanamara Matsuri or “Festival of the Steel Phallus"” is an annual Shinto fertility festival in which prostitutes paid respect to the metal phallus in hopes to gain protection from sexually transmitted diseases. Today, the festival attracts tourists from around the globe and raises money for HIV research. Visitors get a rise out of the penis-themed candies, toys, statues, candles, and food. Don’t miss your chance to hop on a giant wooden battering ramrod and get your picture taken at this smile-inducing event!

This is a great time of year to visit the island nation, as the festival coincides with Japan’s famous cherry blossoms whilst in full bloom. Fly into Tokyo and take a short train ride to Kawasaki.
