Rich in Music, Art, and History

The 4-day Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts is one of the largest music and art festivals in the world drawing tens of thousands of festival-goers to the Vale of Avalon outside of Glastonbury, England. The sleepy area is rich in English history and mythology. The town transforms into a vibrant community filled with friendly individuals, music, and mind-blowing art.

Glastonbury’s history of hosting festivals dates back to 1914 when Rutland Boughton hosted a series of cultural festivals including staged works, music, lectures, and recitals. The modern rendition of the Glastonbury Festival took form in September 19, 1970, the day after Jimi Hendrix died, and was attended by 1,500 people. Today, nearly 100,000 people camp at the festival with hundreds of musical acts to choose from and enjoy colorful large and small-scale art pieces expressing creativity at its finest.

Festival organizers encourage attendees to use public transportation to get to the event in effort to green the festival. Visit the website for more information. If you forget your earplugs, expect to be woken at sun-up on Sunday morning by a combination of drums, chanting, and torches from the crowds forming at the Stone Circle. Be prepared for the rain and mud of England in the summertime.

Festival organizers donate a significant portion of profits to public charities, including giving over £200,000 (approximately $315,000) to Oxfam in 2005. Be sure to get your tickets early and start planning for the pilgrimage.
